If goats had supermodels, Nubians would probably be at the front of the line.
With their long floppy ears, Nubian goats are one of the most recognisable dairy goat breeds in the world, but they’re not just beautiful, they’re also fantastic dairy animals, producing rich creamy milk that many people love to use for everything from cheese to ice cream.
They’re curious, affectionate and not shy about letting you know when they think it’s feeding time.
The History of Nubian Goats
Nubian goats, often called Anglo-Nubians, were developed in England during the late 1800s.
Breeders combined traditional British goats with goats from the Middle East, North Africa and India to create a strong dairy goat that could handle different climates while still producing rich milk.
The result was the Nubian goat we know today, a hardy dairy breed with those famous long ears and a distinctive Roman nose.
Over time Nubians spread across the world and eventually made their way to Australia, where they are now one of the most well known and loved dairy goat breeds.
Milk Production
Nubian goats are well known for producing generous amounts of beautiful creamy milk.
A Nubian doe can produce around 2–4 litres of milk per day, depending on genetics, nutrition and stage of lactation.
Their milk typically contains around 4–5% butterfat, giving it a smooth, creamy texture that works wonderfully for home dairy production.
Because of this balance between volume and richness, Nubian milk is excellent for making:
• Cheese
• Ice cream
• Butter
• Soap and skincare products
In many ways Nubians offer the best of both worlds a good quantity of milk while still keeping that creamy dairy quality people love.

Life with Nubian Goats
Living with Nubian goats quickly teaches you that they are much more than just dairy animals.
Nubians are well known for their gentle, affectionate personalities and their strong connection with people and quickly become part of the family, happily following you around the paddock or waiting to see what you’re doing next. They are very social animals and enjoy interaction, whether that’s a scratch, helping you with chores, or simply standing nearby keeping you company.
Nubians are also known for being a little more vocal than some other goat breeds. If dinner is late or they think they deserve attention, some are not shy about letting you know.
Despite their larger size Nubians are generally very gentle and easy to handle, which makes them a wonderful dairy breed for families and small farms. While Nubians are excellent dairy goats, owning them doesn’t mean you have to milk them. Some people choose to milk their goats daily, while others allow the kids to stay with their mum full time and drink all the milk themselves. Many people simply enjoy their goats for their personalities and the role they play on the farm. There’s no single “right” way to enjoy dairy goats, the most important thing is choosing a system that works for your lifestyle and for the wellbeing of your animals.
Once you spend a little time around Nubians, it’s easy to understand why so many people fall in love with those floppy ears and friendly faces.
