❓ What is the Breed-Up Program?

The Breed-Up Program is a long term, more cost-effective way to work toward owning purebred Valais Blacknose Sheep. It starts with a Valais ram (or semen) and a carefully selected ewe from another breed, often English Leicester, Lincoln Longwool, or similar. Each generation brings you closer to pure Valais genetics, typically reaching 96.9-99.9 purity (F5) or higher.

❓ What Kind Of Ewe Do I Need To Start?

We recommend using ewes with white wool and non-shedding coats to help preserve the signature Valais look. English Leicesters are our preferred breed due to their beautiful fleece, calm temperament and suitable size. That said, we’re always happy to chat through your setup and goals to help you choose the right foundation ewe.

❓ How long does the Breed-Up Program take?

The program typically takes five generations to reach purebred status. Each generation increases the percentage of Valais Blacknose genetics, with the fifth generation considered Australian pure. It’s a longer term investment but the reward is a stunning, high value sheep with all the traits that make the Valais so special.

❓ What do the “F” numbers mean?

“F” stands for “foundation” or “filial” generation. Here’s a quick breakdown:

F1 = 48-71.9% Valais
F2 = 72-83.9% Valais
F3 = 84-89.9% Valais
F4 = 90-95.9% Valais
F5 = 96.9-99.9 % Valais
