Why Choose the Breed-Up Program?

If you’re looking to introduce Valais Blacknose Sheep to your farm but face budget constraints, the Breed-Up Program may be an ideal option. It allows you to enter the world of Valais Blacknose genetics at a more accessible price point, while still achieving quality sheep that retain the breed’s distinctive characteristics. By participating in the Breed-Up Program, you can gradually work towards raising purebred Valais Blacknose Sheep, with each generation improving in purity and maintaining the genetic integrity of the breed.

What is the Breed-Up Program?

This process focuses on using semen from purebred Valais Blacknose rams to create each generation of ewes, ensuring the integrity of the Valais Blacknose bloodline. The program begins with a ewe, using a range of compatible sheep breeds that meet the structural and health standards necessary for the breed-up process. Through five generations of breeding, the offspring gradually reach a point where they can be considered purebred. At the fifth generation (F5), rams can be registered as Australian Breed Up Pure (A Class), with a minimum of 96% Valais Blacknose genetics.

•F1 Ewes: 48-71.9% Valais genetics. Produced from an origin ewe crossed with a registered purebred Valais Blacknose ram or a DNA verified Australian Breed Up Pure ram.

•F2 Ewes: 72-83.9% Valais genetics. Produced from an F1 ewe crossed with a registered purebred Valais Blacknose ram or an Australian Breed Up Pure ram.

•F3 Ewes: 84-89.9% Valais genetics. Produced from an F2 ewe crossed with a registered purebred Valais Blacknose ram or an Australian Breed Up Pure ram.

•F4 Ewes: 90-95.9% Valais genetics. Produced from an F3 ewe crossed with a registered purebred Valais Blacknose ram or an Australian Breed Up Pure ram.

•F5 Ewes and Rams (A Class): 96-99.9% Valais genetics. Produced from an F4 ewe crossed with a registered purebred Valais Blacknose ram or an Australian Breed Up Pure ram. Both ewes and rams can be registered at this stage. Once the F5 ewes and rams are inspected and verified to meet the breed standards, they are officially recognised as Australian Breed Up Pure and can contribute to the next generation of Valais Blacknose Sheep.

Why We're Passionate About the Breed-Up Program

Our passion for the breed-up program stems from the opportunity it provides to get so many people involved in the journey of raising Valais Blacknose Sheep. It’s about sharing the experience with others, watching the breed thrive and making it accessible to a wider community of farmers and enthusiasts.

Watching each new generation grow and develop is something we truly treasure. It’s exciting, rewarding, fun and we love seeing the positive impact these sheep have on people.

We understand how intimidating starting out with sheep can be, and that’s why we offer support at all stages, from starting with just straws of semen to pregnant English Leicesters, to F1s and beyond. We’re not just here to provide you with a start, we’re here to be with you every step of the way, if you’ll have us. Your journey is important to us. We’ve had support in our journey and we want to pass it on to help you achieve success. By carefully managing the genetics of each generation, we’re contributing to the long-term sustainability of the Valais Blacknose Sheep in Australia.

We’re thrilled to be able to give more people the chance to experience the Valais Blacknose Sheep and we look forward to what the future holds for this exciting breed.
